VanceS: Hi Cheryl

CherylO: Hi Vance, Hi Bill, thought I was going to be here alone

billc: Hi Cheryl and Bance

billc: Sorry, Vance

VanceS: hi Vill

VanceS: I mean Bill

billc: typo first thing. . . .

billc: y'all veen here long?

VanceS: I just got here

billc -)

CherylO: just arrived

VanceS: I had to put ten dollars on my cc for the priviledge

CherylO: vance, lots of webheads taking webcastacademy and doing very well.

VanceS: George Bush Airport, Houston

DennisOl joined the room.

CherylO: I wondered where you were vance

billc: Hey Dennis

CherylO: Hello DennisO

VanceS: Cheryl, Bee needs someone to stream her plenary on Aug 10

DennisOl: Hi, folks.

billc: airports really stick it to you for access, don't they?

VanceS: not necessarily

VanceS: Phoenix is free

CherylO: I know, we are working on it, I am on vacation for the 8th to the
12. and in the mtns.

VanceS: that's my next stop

VanceS: I'll be right there by Dennis

billc: that's nice, wish more would follow suit

DennisOl: Wow!

VanceS: in a couple of hours

VanceS: Just passting through

CherylO: Vance have you and Dennis met f2f, yet?

VanceS: heading for Long Beach

DennisOl: Too bad that you won't be here very long, Vance.

billc: where ya headed Vance? Big conference?

VanceS: no, we haven't I don't think

VanceS: No, winding up summer hols

DennisOl: Actually we have, but it was a long time ago.

DennisOl: We met briefly in Vancouver, BC.

VanceS: a tesol conf dennis?

billc: yup, that time of year. . .

VanceS: which year

DennisOl: Yes.

DennisOl: 2000 or 2001.

VanceS: The most recent or the one before

DennisOl: The one before.

VanceS: I mean I've been to two in Vancouver

VanceS: I think the first was in the 90's

DennisOl: No, it was 2000, I think. Let me check.

VanceS: where did we meet Dennis? In what context?

billc: Cheryl, you mentioned the webcast academy, I've heard of it, but not
sure what it is. . .

CherylO: it is part of the worldbridges.net   network and people can learn
to stream content. Like Carla is working on getting a show brazilbridges, I
have a show womenofweb 2.0

DennisOl: Yes, it was 2000. You gave a workshop or presentation on the
Webheads and I talked to you briefly after it.

CherylO: There are others with Jeff Lebow at worldbridges and Dave Cormier
at edtechtalk.com

VanceS: great Dennis, I wish you had emphasised that we would be working
closely in the near future

billc: sounds cool. Can't imagine really learning something like streaming
very easily on one's own

VanceS: cheryl, are you talking right now?

billc: Oh, that's where I heard about it

DafneG joined the room.

CherylO: you can learn it all online in the 5 week course. Actually VAnce
Susan Ettenheim and I are teaching. go figure

DafneG hugs and kisses all on both cheeks

CherylO: Hello Dafne

DennisOl: Dafne! Abrazos!

VanceS: Hi Daf

CherylO: kiss kiss

billc: Hey Dafne

VanceS: Cheryl, I've done one webcast academy so when I return to Abu Dhabi

VanceS: I can pick up where I left off

CherylO: you sure can pick up where you left off.

VanceS: I've got my initial recording up already

CherylO: Vance this group is very collaborative and are helping one another
with practice times and streaming it is great.

DennisOl: I'm interested in the Webcast Academy, but the timing wasn't right
for me to get involved in the current one.

VanceS: Bee has no one who can stream for her though with 99.9% surety

billc: When do these usually take place?

CherylO: Actually Jeff is going to graduate next Sat. 17:00 GMT I believe.
He will be the first graduate. JoseR will graduate the following Sat.

DafneG: I would have liked to start the webcast academy session, but it
caught me in the middle of my flight to Spain

VanceS: Jeff ... ?? lebow??

CherylO: Yes, no one has officialy graduated.

DennisOl: Are you in Spain now, Dafne?

DafneG: yes, I am in Spain, Dennis :-)

VanceS: how are the street parties?

CherylO: I know we are looking to help Bee. I am away on vacation in the
mtns. and no good connections for internet

DennisOl: Wonderful! :-)

VanceS: I have been able to stream from Abu Dhabi but each time I've done it

VanceS: I've lost contact with the streaming server after 5 min

VanceS: I can't promise Bee I can hold the stream at this moment

CherylO: OH, vance, that is discouraging

VanceS: I'll be back in Abu Dhabi on Aug 9

CherylO: we will keep looking.

VanceS: I could play with it then

billc: Do you all use a common server when working on streaming?

VanceS: we use the worldbridges sandbox server

DafneG: Officially, I will be here until September, Dennis

CherylO: yes, we use the worldbridges servers, don't get too technicial on
me now bill

VanceS: it's dead simple, kind of like flying a plane

VanceS: upside down in a fog

VanceS: while checking chat windows and whatnot

billc: oh, that's good, can't say i've piloted before

billc: but crashing a server is probably a little less dramatic. . .

VanceS: just a matter of getting all the sound devices working off the same
settings

VanceS: plus some soft devices like virtual audio cables

VanceS: so you can get both sides of a skype chat

VanceS: and pulling in your side through a usb mic

VanceS: which is part of the configuration mix

VanceS: that and VAC

CherylO: I am Mac, Vance so I don't understand VAC, is it a piece of
software vs. actual cables

ClaireB joined the room.

CherylO: hello claire

billc: Hey Claire

SusanR joined the room.

CherylO: susan r, hello

VanceS: yes, virtual audio cables basically runs a wire from your out jack
to your in jack

DennisOl: Cheryl: It's possible to stream on a Mac via Nicecast.

VanceS: but not physically, internally

billc: Hi Susan

CherylO: okay, now I get it

SusanR: Hi Cheryl

DafneG hugs Claire

DennisOl: Hi, Claire! Hugs!

VanceS: so it's digital not analog

VanceS: and has not static

VanceS: pure sound

CherylO: digital not analog, got it.

CherylO: good explanation

SusanR waves a hearty hello to everyone

DafneG: hey, Susan :-)

DennisOl: Hi, Susan!

SusanR: Hi Dafne

CherylO: susanr, are you traveling? what time zone?

ClaireB left the room (signed off).

VanceS: so you play the skypecast out thru VAC and back IN to your sound
card

SusanR: aestern time zone

VanceS: and pick up the USB input from the mic

SusanR: eastern

CherylO: oh, the whole sound card thing.

ClaireB joined the room.

VanceS: and stream it thru simulcast

VanceS: and bobs your uncle

CherylO: Where are you on the east coast?

VanceS: that's all there is to it

SusanR: Ottawa, Ontario

VanceS: that and holding the connection to the server

ClaireB: hi guys

VanceS: whihc is where I fall off

ClaireB hugs all

DafneG hugs Claire again :-)

ClaireB: Dennis! so good to see you here!

SusanR: we are inland

ClaireB: was I here before?

CherylO: so vance is it a bandwidth thing?

DennisOl: Thanks, Claire!

VanceS: hi claire

DafneG: yes, Claire

billc: so going into the sound card, you use the mic jack or the line in?

VanceS: not sure Cheryl

VanceS: havn't had time to play with it

VanceS: maybe I'll see what I can do on Aug 9

CherylO: okay, i am sure Jeff can get that technical with you while watching
the server, I can't do that yet.

VanceS: the only physical in Bill is the USB mic

DennisOl: I gather that getting the configurations set up correctly is one
of the trickiest parts of the streaming process.

DennisOl: That and having the right kind of mic.

DafneG: I will try the webcast academy when I am settled again

CherylO: you are right dennis, and having the settings stick

VanceS: everything else is thru the sound card as it's picked up from
whatever audio you're monitoring

DennisOl: Yes.

ClaireB: daf, i was trying to log on before but didn't quite make it and had
to try again

CherylO: Dafne, you would get it very quickly, you are so good

DennisOl: I have to leave for a few minutes, but I'll be back . . . . .

DafneG: thanks Cheryl, but I am not very techie

VanceS: Dennis the usB mic is important

billc: so what is special about the mic besides that it's usb?

VanceS: not expensive

VanceS: and yes the settings are the tricky part

VanceS: you make a checklist

VanceS: that's why it's like flying a plane

ClaireB: daf is VERY good

CherylO: Dafne, you don't have to be very techie, it is the set up. Carla is
very close to getting Brazilbridges going, I am so excited

VanceS: pilots use checklists too

ClaireB: i use checklists

billc: checklists are good. Just saw a blog saying that is the key to doing
a thesis. .  .

CherylO: checklists yes, absolutely, and checking settings that just switch
automatically, when youa re not looking

VanceS: the usb mic is important because it takes sound NOT thru the line in
on the sound card

VanceS: if you do that with skype it is not recordd

DafneG: I need to be at my own computer to do that, so I have to wait :-(

NinaTL joined the room.

DafneG hugs Nina from Spain

CherylO: hello Nina, long time!

billc: Hello Nina

NinaTL hugs everybody

ClaireB: hi nina

ClaireB hugs nina

NinaTL: It's great to see you all, especially Dafne joining us from Spain!

NinaTL: I didn't think I'd be able to come today

DafneG: wb, Vance

VanceS: me neither

NinaTL: AGU in America is in full swing

billc: here in Thailand it's almost bed time

NinaTL: The group arrived Thursday

VanceS: thailand, cool

VanceS: where in Thailand

billc: Chiang Mai, in the north

billc: It's about as cool as it gets here. . .

VanceS: very nice

ClaireB: definitely breakfast time in pitsburgh

NinaTL: Are you American, Bill?

billc: yup, from Minnesota

DafneG: how lucky, Thailand

VanceS: I like chiang mai tho i hardly recognized it last time I was there

NinaTL: How long have you lived in Thailand?

billc: yeah, little change of environment

billc: been here about 9 years

NinaTL: So you must like it!

VanceS: what do you do there?

billc: Yeah, nice place to be. I'm a computer instructor at an international
school here

VanceS: what's not to like in thailand

billc: middle/high school students

NinaTL: Do you speak Thai, Bill?

VanceS: it's one of my favorite countries

NinaTL: I don't know, I've never been to Thailand, although I have taught
lots of Thai students

VanceS: mai pom pud pasau thai a crap

billc: yeah, get along alright. Wife's Thai, it helps a lot in the speaking
end

VanceS: na crap

NinaTL: Vance, are you swearing?

billc: hey, very nice, Vance

DafneG: lol

ClaireB: vance, stop swearing at us

billc: Where'd you learn?

NinaTL: Daf, are you on vacation or working in Spain?

VanceS: no that's an honorific na crap

NinaTL: honorific crap, huh?

VanceS: but only men use that one

NinaTL: Figures

DafneG: on vacation, I guess, looking for a job also

ClaireB: lol nina!

NinaTL: Really?

billc: I can confirm that, crap is not quite the same as in English

VanceS: what do women say bill?

NinaTL: Fortunately

VanceS: slips my mind

NinaTL: maybe na shit?

billc: of course it's usually spelled with Thai characters too

DafneG: lol, Nina

NinaTL blushes and apologizes

billc: the honorific for women is ka

VanceS: ka yes

NinaTL: Sawadika

NinaTL: or something like that

VanceS: thai women are so sweet when they say ka

billc: hey, wow, we have a lot of Thai speakers here

NinaTL: I am definitely NOT a Thai speaker

VanceS: yes and I say sawadi crap

NinaTL: Any luck with the job search, Daf?

billc: well, you have a couple of words anyway

NinaTL: Vance, will you please stop swearing? There are ladies present!

DafneG: still hunting, Nina

billc: so Vance, how many languages do you know then?

NinaTL: What does "know" mean?

VanceS: good question

billc: good point

NinaTL: If they have any brains they will snap you up, Daf

VanceS: I mull on Nina's point

NinaTL: People often ask me how many languages I "know"

NinaTL: I can never answer that question

NinaTL: Dennis, you aren't saying much--are you lurking?

ClaireB: i always answer that i barely know englihs

ClaireB: english

billc: seems like i've heard Thai, Portuguese, and Spanish coming out of
your keyboard a least

ClaireB: vance knows arabic too

VanceS: I was just in France and Spain

NinaTL: Lucky you!

VanceS: I can understand and speak french pretty well

billc: guess Spain is the place to go these days. . .

VanceS: in Spain I can speak ok but don't always understand

VanceS: so I guess i don't 'know' spanish

VanceS: my arabic is about the same as that as well

NinaTL: That's the problem with "know"

VanceS: I can get around, but can't discuss politics

NinaTL: I have the same problem with the word "bilingual"

NinaTL: I took a class on bilingualism in grad school

billc: yeah, bilingual can be sort of a tricky term, huh?

NinaTL: I had always thought bilingual meant equally competent in 2
languages

VanceS: a good test is whether you can understand radio

NinaTL: but the professor said almost nobody is truly equally competent

NinaTL: Everyonbody's competencies vary to some degree

NinaTL: *everybody's

billc: I have to confess that i'm not equally competent, my English is
getting lost bit by bit

NinaTL: So there is no clear line between bilingual and unilingual but
having some competence in L2

VanceS: that can't happen Bill, it's your native language

billc: guess it's sort of give and take. . .

VanceS: your native language is instinctive (Pinker)

NinaTL: Bill, you feel you speak Thai better than English? Or just you have
slipped a bit in English?

billc: I've heard some westerners who have been here for a while speak some
pretty original English

billc: Just lost some specialized terminology from time to time

NelbaQ joined the room.

NinaTL: My husband has forgotten some Greek words

NelbaQ: Morning, everybody! :)

DennisOl: Nelba! Abrazos!

NinaTL hugs Nelba

billc: Hi Nelba

VanceS: Hi Nelba

CherylO: hi Nelba

DafneG hugs Nelba

NelbaQ: Ni, Nina, Daf, Vance

NinaTL: When we go to Greece, he sometimes forgets which language he is
speaking and inserts English words into his conversation

NinaTL: I have to kick him

NelbaQ: I am a bit sleepy

billc: That's funny, sometimes that happens to me when i'm tired

billc: I have to kick myself. . .

billc: How many languages does your husband speak Nina?

billc: What time is it for you, Nelba?

ClaireB: hi nelba

NinaTL: Just Greek and English

MoiraH joined the room.

billc: Oh, how often do you go to Greece?

en españa!

MoiraH: based on trust, you click :-(

DafneG: gracias, Dennis

VanceS: so you click on the link? how does it prompt you to do that

DafneG: besos a todos

NelbaQ: yes, Claire.

MoiraH: besos Daf :-))

NinaTL: I think some people are very cautious about email links--they prefer
to copy and paste

NelbaQ: besitos, Daf :)

NinaTL: but I tend to click on the links, especially in friends' emails

DennisOl smiles and sends more hugs

VanceS hugs Daf

ClaireB: nelba, a few weeks ago i was in brazil
